The Training Instructors

Sarah L. Meadows, MSW, LISW-AP and George W. Appenzeller, MSW, LISW-CP & AP, LPC authored the Choices® curriculum in 2003 at the request of the Richland County SC Solicitor's Office. The Solicitor's Office knew that Sarah and George were familiar with the juvenile justice system and the young people they serve. Sarah has worked in education, the alcohol and drug field and child welfare. George has worked in publishing, research, alcohol and drug abuse and with the state Medicaid agency.

In addition to conducting research and evaluation of youth development and juvenile justice programs, both have extensive hands-on experience working with at-risk and adjudicated youth. Since 1989, they have worked with troubled children and adolescents in the Challenge Adventures wilderness adventure program (www.challengeadventures.org). Their approach combines adventure and animal-assisted therapy, using llamas as trail companions for the youth.

In addition, they have trained social workers, counselors, teachers and other professionals in South Carolina and Vermont on how to apply adventure and cognitive-behavioral intervention methods with behavior-disordered youth. Sarah and George are principals in System Wide Solutions, a consulting company in Columbia, SC.
